徒歩で日本縦断の旅 Walking Across Japan 58

From Hakuba to Itoigawa, the route is lined with long, aging tunnels built many years ago. A grandmother I met in Hakuba warned me that it would be very dangerous to walk through them, as they were never designed for pedestrians.

She was worried that I might be heading straight into another world, so she drove me 30 minutes from Hakuba to Itoigawa to see the tunnels for myself.

From Kagoshima to Hakuba, I had never encountered anything like them. The tunnels were long and old—lit by a very dim, brownish glow. The darkness was overwhelming, almost like a scene from hell. Some sections curved sharply, making it impossible for drivers to notice anyone walking ahead.
